Burgess's pen name Sarah Steinbrenner appears on the covers of The Dark Woods Trilogy authored with Laura Briggs, including First Bite, Gingerbread House, and an unnamed title to be released in 2012. The German-inspired name recognizes the background of the stories told by Grimm and shares its history with the citizens most unfairly treated in the original, uncensored texts, the Jews (a genetic heritage which includes her cousins).
The original The Dark Woods Trilogy included retellings of "Snow White" and "Hansel and Gretel" as dark fantasy suspense stories (a genre new for both authors). First Bite: The Wicked Queen's Tale was the first release, followed several months later by Gingerbread House.
The writing partners share a web page for their fantasy work, including book trailers, release dates, and polls for readers and fans at www.thedarkwoodsbooks.blogspot.com. A potential second series of The Dark Woods is being considered for 2013-2014.
Some of her unpublished material was originally drafted under the name Sara Sullivan, which was not listed on any of her works with Briggs or other writers. Currently, this name is not slated to appear on any of the upcoming book series.
